George's 1967 Harley-Davidson XLH Sportster Most of us have a favorite old motorcycle, the one we enjoy riding the most, the one we know model history on. For long time J&P Cycles employee, then National Motorcycle Museum part time guy, George Barnard, it was the Harley Sportster, the performance Harley-Davidson that hit the streets and drag strips in 1957. In fact, George’s email handle began; 58sport. Many moons ago George acquired a second year XL and it was a constant pro...Continue reading

1951 Jacobsen Power Cycle Prototype In the early years, the American motorcycle industry served riders with a broad range of machines including lightweight singles. But post-Depression most American motorcycles were at least 500cc’s and had a considerable weight and price tag. The price of a new Indian or Harley-Davidson could buy most of a new Ford or Chevy. But the scooter niche, which began in the 1920’s, offered a more affordable, convenient and light weight alternative. ...American industry adapted, diversified and we saw machines like Salsbury and Cushman scooters come along and then the Whizzer, a power cycle built around a bicycle chassis. Not a new idea, the clip-on engine for a bicycle, but they served well here and abroad. In fact, Honda’s first machine post-World War II used a War surplus Tohatsu engine. A Racine, Wisconsin engine and lawn mower manufacturer considered ways diversify its offerings. The Jacobsen research and development department built about ten prototype power cycles using one of their small two-cycle engines mounted high above the pedal crank on a standard bicycle. The idea was to offer a kit customers could install on a standard bicycle, not to sell a complete machine. The January 1985 edition of THE COASTER, the newsletter of the Classic Bicycle and Whizzer Club of America, tells the story. In 1951 about ten prototype kits were made by Jacobsen Manufacturing Company, Racine, Wisconsin, and installed on a range of bicycles. The Racine Explorer Scouts were engaged to test the new machines on a 1000 mile ride through Wisconsin and Michigan, followed by a truck with mechanics, factory staff and spare parts. The test went well and each Scout was offered his test bike for $45. But the rest of the story is that an employee apparently lost part of a finger in a drive belt perhaps before a belt guard had been designed in, and the company cancelled the project. Long time Museum supporter and motorcycle lender Dan Rognsvoog acquired this week’s featured bike. He enjoys that it’s a prototype, one of a few likely still existing, and likes that it’s pretty much original and has an interesting back story. Knud Jacobsen, a Danish immigrant was a skilled woodworker and developed a successful industrial pattern making company, Thor Machine Works. Thor launched Jacobsen lawn mowing machines in the early 1920’s. Commercial in capacity, they were favored by golf courses. Jacobsen is now owned by Textron and is based in England. 1965 Honda 150 CA95 The Honda Dream series was touring oriented and encompassed machines from 154cc’s to 305cc’s, all OHC parallel twins. Its styling with squar...ed headlight, fender edges and distinctive flips at the fender tips, is sometimes referred to as pagoda styling as the shapes mimic some forms of early Eastern architecture. The frame design makes use of the electric start engine/transmission unit as a stressed member. This frame engineering is derived largely from the work of a couple of European makers, BMW and NSU to name two. Honda perfected the pressed steel/backbone frame and used it on numerous motorcycles from 50cc to 305cc’s. In addition, a pressed steel leading link fork, housing springs and shock absorbers and an integrated headlight case with speedometer, also squared off, worked well on dozens of machines. Black tires, then wide whitewalls, then narrow, showed up on many of the bikes in this series as did enclosed final drive chains. The Honda 150, sold in America from late 1959 to 1967 remains a popular machine with collectors. It was available in black, scarlet red, blue and white. The CA95 engine design places the cam chain to one side, while the later CA160, CL160 and CB160 engine ran the cam chain between the two cylinders and cooled better. The Honda 150 CA95 was superseded by the CA160, or CA160 Touring 160 which used the newer design Honda CB160 style engine. Honda used this very capable 124cc/154cc single overhead cam parallel twin engine design in several models shipped to America including the CA95 Dream and, with enhancements, the 125cc CB92 Benly Super Sport 125, also known as the Benly 125. The National Motorcycle Museum has a good collection of Japanese motorcycles including early pre-importation 1950’s Honda models along with 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s machines, mini-bikes, street and off-road. This Honda CA95 was graciously donated by Martin Carver. Specifications: Engine: 360 Degree Parallel Twin Design: Single Overhead Cam/Air-Cooled Bore & Stroke: 44mm x 44mm Bore & Stroke Displacement: 154cc’s Carburetor: Keihin 22mm Electrics: 6V Battery, Points / Coil Horsepower: 16.5HP Primary: Helical Cut Gears Transmission: Four-Speed Clutch: Wet, Multi-plate Final Drive: Enclosed Chain Starting: Kick and Electric Electrics: 6V / Alternator / Coil & Points Suspension: Leading Link / Swingarm, Dual Shocks Wheels/Tires: 3.00 x 16 and 3.00 X 16 Brakes: Drum, Front and Rear Wheelbase: 52 Inches Weight: 245 Pounds

1933 Brough-Superior 11/50 Just about any seasoned vintage motorcycle enthusiast’s eyes will light up when you say the words Brough-Superior. Though out of production for about 80 years, among all brands world-wide they are still regarded as very fine, even luxury motorcycles, if there is such a thing, even though their engines were sourced, not made by Brough. Along with Vincents which are more sporting oriented, starting about 40 to 50 years ago, Broughs gradually became hi...Continue reading
