Monona Iowa Police Department 10.03.2022

***November Press Release*** In November, the Monona Police Department filed 10 criminal charges resulting in 3 arrests. Monona PD additionally conducted 17 traffic stops resulting in 8 citations and 12 warnings. A criminal charge is merely an accusation. All persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.... On November 2nd, 2020 the Monona Police Department was notified of a stolen vehicle that was taken by two male juveniles. The vehicle was later found in a neighboring state and the juveniles were brought back to the area. It was discovered that other items were also stolen. The two juveniles were charged with 5th degree theft. All other charges were filed by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office. On November 4th, 2020 the Monona Police Department responded to McGregor to assist the Mar-Mac Police Department with a possible burglary attempt. The investigation was assisted by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol. On November 10th, 2020 the Monona Police Department was dispatched to Highway 18 near the intersection of Falcon Avenue for a vehicle versus pedestrian accident. Upon arrival it was discovered that two male juveniles were crossing the highway when one was struck by a vehicle heading east causing minor injuries. The investigation was handled by the Iowa State Patrol. On November 13th, 2020 a Monona Police officer conducted a traffic stop for an equipment violation. It was discovered that the driver Katie Willis of Monona and the passenger Everett Willis of Monona, were both protected parties in a no contact order. Both parties were arrested and taken to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and charged with violation of a no contact order. On November 14th, 2020 the Monona Police Department was notified of a driving complaint on Highway 18. The on duty officer would locate the vehicle, in which the vehicle would shortly pull into a driveway inside city limits. The driver of the vehicle would be identified as Fred Schmidt of Monona. The officer could see signs of impairment and applied for a search warrant for the subject’s breath. The subject was charged with OWI 2nd offense, driving while barred, operating w/o ignition interlock, interference with official acts, and given two citations for failure to give continuous turn signal. The passenger Denise Devries of Monona was charged with interference with official acts and given a citation for permitting an unauthorized person to drive. On November 21st, 2020 the Monona Police Department was notified of a disturbance at Kwik Star. Upon arrival Blake Sprague of Dubuque, Iowa and Joshua Jerde of Dubuque, Iowa had gotten into an altercation while driving to Minnesota. The two would stop at Kwik Star in which the altercation continued. Both parties were separated and no charges were filed.

Monona Iowa Police Department 06.03.2022

Chief Jo Amsden and the entire Monona Police Department wishes to express its sympathy and send condolences to the family of Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith, and to the Iowa State Patrol as a whole. Sergeant Jim Smith was shot and died as a result of his injuries last night while attempting to apprehend the individual who had just seriously assaulted a Grundy Center Police Officer. Sergeant Jim Smith was assigned to Post 10, which is the Post that serves the area in and around Monona. Please keep his family and coworkers in your thoughts as they try to cope with this immense loss, especially troopers you see every day in our local area, as they worked very closely with him. Sergeant Jim Smith dedicated 27 years to the state patrol and to the citizens of Iowa, and ultimately gave his life protecting us.
