Tips on How to Use Air Conditioner Effectively in Summers No matter how much you long for a sunbath in summers, no one loves hot temperatures when sitting indoors. Here are some summer-specific tips for using your AC more effectively: 1. Pair It With a Ceiling fan... To beat the heat on a sunny day, all one wants is just to sit under the cool air. But we know you can’t do that all day considering the high amount of electric bills that it would result in. The solution is to pair your air conditioner with a ceiling fan. Run your air conditioner on the lowest setting required and turn the ceiling fan on. This way, cool air will spread across a wide area, maintaining a comfortable environment. Instead of choosing between an air conditioner and a fan, it’s best to combine the two for maximum comfort and efficiency. 2. Direct AC Vanes Upwards When using the air conditioner in cool mode, keep the direction of vanes upwards. It is because cool air circulates best in an upward direction. 3. Don’t Let Your Thermostat Take the Heat Thermostat placement matters a lot when maintaining temperature indoors. As you already know that the thermostat reads the temperature from its surroundings and then makes changes. Therefore, while installing a thermostat, make sure it’s not placed under direct sunlight, near a door or a window, or above air vents. Placing in an incorrect position will result in false readings and an undesired room temperature. How To Know If My Air Conditioner Needs Servicing? Warm Air If the system is having trouble reaching the desired temperature set on the , check the air coming out of the vents. If it’s not cool or cold to the touch, there’s a problem. Now look at the thermostat to confirm that you’ve set it correctly and it’s working properly. If all appears normal, then call for help. Rarely is there anything the homeowner can do in this situation.... System Freezes Up This is a common problem with air conditioners. If you see ice on the cooling coil or refrigerant lines, it requires a call to Northwest Plumbing, Heating & AC. This condition is most often caused by low refrigerant level or poor airflow which is often the result of a dirty or clogged filter. Poor Airflow If the air coming out of the vents feels cool, but there’s not much airflow, the first thing to suspect is a dirty filter. The filter can clog if it’s not replaced at least every three months. If the filter is in good shape the airflow problem could be related to a worn-out compressor or significant leaks in the ductwork. Either problem is going to require air conditioning service. High Utility Bills If you’ve lived in your quad cities home for very long, you have a pretty good idea what a normal monthly bill is during the air condition season. If the electricity bills have gradually gotten higher or there has been a sudden spike, your air conditioner is no longer working efficiently meaning you need seasonal maintenance. Odd Sounds & Smells I admit in some cases these can be obvious warning signs, but others not so much. * If you can detect a musty odor when the AC is running it could mean a problem with mold. * Electrical smells might be coming from loose or corroded electrical connections. * A squealing noise, especially on older air conditioners, could indicate a loose or worn drive belt. * Grinding sounds can come from bad bearings in the motor. Here’s the good news. Just about all of those problems can be prevented with regular seasonal maintenance, meaning you won’t even have a chance to notice the strange sounds and smells. The Best Time to Turn On Your Air Conditioning Around this time of year, as the temperature begins to rise and homeowners across the province anxiously await all of the fun activities that come with summer, we often get asked when the best time to turn on the air conditioning is. While no one specific date is considered to be the best time to turn on your air conditioning, there are a few suggestions we can offer to help guide you to the right answer for your home. When S...hould You Turn On Your Air Conditioner? The temperature outside begins to rise and reach consistently high levels at different times each year, which is why it’s difficult for us to provide an exact date and time to turn on your air conditioning. We usually say by the May 24th long-weekend to give homeowners a rough idea of when they should be ready to start using their cooling system, but it really comes down to keeping an eye on the average daily temperatures. Once the temperature outside is consistently rising above 20 Celsius, that’s when we suggest that homeowners begin to use their cooling systems. There are usually a few days in April and May where the temperature rises above 20C, but once early June rolls around, you will start to see the temperature consistently rising above that. Those temperature trends are why we use Victoria Day weekend as our rough estimate for the best time to turn on your air conditioning. Ultimately, it’s really up to you when you want to start using your air conditioner, but if your home feels unseasonably warm, don’t hesitate to turn your cooling system on because no rule states once you start using it you have to use it every day. Plan Ahead While you may not start using your cooling system until sometime in May or June, the best time to turn your air conditioning on for the first time isn’t once the temperature is uncomfortably warm. It’s a good idea to fire up your air conditioner on the first 20C day to ensure that everything is running properly before the extreme heat arrives. You should also book your annual cooling system maintenance and take advantage of our May Special so that you know your cooling system will run efficiently and can get you through the extra hot months ahead.
