This morning I renewed my Oath of Office to the people of Polk County. I appreciated Iowa District Court Judge David Porter administering the oath. Thank you again for your confidence and support. I'm honored to be leading so many outstanding men and women at the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Stay safe friends. Work from or stay home tomorrow if you can; ice will be under the snow (up to 8"). https://www.weather.gov/dmx/

Very proud to stand with these fine Deputies and public servants. To those that are wondering how they can give back to their community and make a living at the same time? Here's a hint: https://www.joinpcso.com/

Couldn't help but get teary-eyed when I watched this final farewell from the South Lake Tahoe, California PD to a loyal and loving K-9 named Tara. A loyal companion and protector; she received the End of Watch Call ceremony given to all officers when they make the ultimate sacrifice; listen closely. https://www.facebook.com/News4SA/videos/4687923761282763

COVID vaccine distribution is a challenge, no question about it. But the plan that most experts endorse is the importance of getting first-responders vaccinated as soon as possible. Please watch this KCCI report to understand why and where things stand today. https://www.kcci.com//sheriff-says-law-enforcemen/35207426

On Sunday, Nov. 22, my Deputies and I had the honor of working with the Polk City Legion Riders to prepare and deliver 275 Thanksgiving Day dinners to home-bound, local veterans, or their families. This is the 7th year this amazing organization has been doing this event. Joining me during my deliveries was U.S. Senator Joni Ernst. Thank you to the 100 volunteers that came out to help and deliver the meals. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

It was an honor to spend Sunday morning with the Polk City Legion Riders preparing, then delivering 275 Thanksgiving dinners to American veterans and their families across Polk County. This is the 7th year that the Legion Riders have provided these dinners to these very special families. Over 100 volunteers participated in this event, including U.S. Senator Joni Ernst.

Congratulations to President Joe Biden for his inauguration as our nation's 46th Commander and Chief. I look forward to working with your Administration in an effort to bridge the divide in our country and protect our communities.

As the Sheriff of Polk County and a private gun owner, I respect and value the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution; the right to keep and bear arms (passed in 1789). However, I am deeply troubled by the Iowa legislation now being debated. I know that this is an emotional issue on all sides. But recognizing the awesome power held within the hands of a gun owner, common sense would suggest that this person be competent and trained to hold such power. At one time, that logic ...was bi-partisan and even supported by the NRA. Today in Iowa, legislation is being advanced that would ultimately eliminate background checks for gun purchases, permits to carry a firearm, and allow guns in public locations like schools, hospitals, and courthouses. How is this helping to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals and unstable people? How does this protect neighborhoods and our children? The U.S. military, Iowa National Guard, every law enforcement organization in the nation, and even armed security guards, all receive regular and proper training and permits to carry their weapons. They all have background checks to ensure that they do not have a criminal history and do not pose a legitimate risk to our community and themselves. It's bad enough that my Deputies and law enforcement officers across the country face the threat of risky individuals having guns concealed or not. In 2020, 48 brave officers lost their lives in the line of duty to gun violence. But if this law passes, people will now have access to guns with the same convenience as buying a bottle of water - no questions asked. This is about people, not guns. I'm against untrained and dangerous people from holding the power that a gun has. I urge you to contact your Iowa legislator and let them know how you feel; you can be sure that I will. #commonsense #iowa
