Sometimes late night searches pay off. I was looking at FamilySearch Family Tree site at John Stocks and Sarah Mathews when I notice that linked to John Stocks is his parents Joseph Stocks and Ann Hepworth. Interestingly enough Joseph Stocks is shown as passing away in Shelley, Kirkburton, Yorkshire in 1832. John and family came to New York in 1842 along with his sister Jane whom I've not been able to locate and mother Ann. Where is she? Next clue listed on the Family Se...arch site is another sister, Ann Stocks married to Thomas Ellis. So the search is on. Finally on find a grave I find this Ann Stocks Ellis, in Springfield, NY. Widening the search I finally find Ann Stocks, wife of Joseph Stocks, passed away September 29, 1849 Middle Village Cemetery, Springfield, NY at the age of 63 years 2 month and 9 days. Springfield is located north of Cooperstown between Binghamton and Schenectady. Just think 10 years after her husband passes, she comes to New York with son John and family, and daughter Jane, just the year before daughter Ann and Thomas Ellis and "widow" Stocks age 19 comes and settle in Springfield, she joins them, John and Sarah stay and Albany and then travel to Iowa, brother William joins John, I have not been able to locate Jane or who "widow" Stocks was. Anyone up for a "road trip'? See more
It is with sadness that I found out that Margaret Harvey, long time president of association passed away on June 30th. I will post funeral information as soon as it's available.
Longtime President of the Cottage Hill Cemetery Association
Sorry if you are getting messages that I'm not available. Obviously Facebook is trying to control my life. Feel free to contact me at anytime. I do not have any set hours as this is a non-profit organization and not a business which obviously Facebook doesn't understand. Hope this has not caused any inconveniences for anyone.
I picked up my purchases from an Estate Sale today and have a little "gem" an Epworth, Iowa cookbook published by the YWCA of the Epworth Seminary from 1915. 50% of the names in it are people who moved to Epworth from Cottage Hill. Stocks, Hinde, Glew, Atkinson, Maxwell, etc. Even my grandmother Nellie Wright-Stocks's fruit cake recipe. I'm looking forward to trying some of the recipes. The book sold for 35 cents in 1915.
