It's the first day of a new year, after a crazy 2020! Happy New Year! Here's to Getting Sh*t Done in 2021! As some of you may know, during our down time last year, I (Tambrey) started back to school, studying to become a clinical herbalist and add that as a way to help our clients become even more proactive in their health care management! Once in a while, I will share a bit about what I am doing there...and even how the plants ancient symbolic meanings can still have impor...tance in today's society. So let's talk about the Ginkgo biloba Tree today...the oldest known species and the only tree in its class, having survived, basically unchanged, for over 200 million years. It it considered to be a living fossil and has no known living relatives. This resilience and ability to survive who knows what, combined with its antiquity, has granted the tree many symbolic meanings throughout the world. It has become a symbol of strength, hope and peace for many. The tree and its leaves have been represented in art and literature for many centuries, the first know was in the 5th century on a mural in a tomb and uses the ginkgo tree to represent the end of a politically unstable period in China's history and a movement towards peace. Buddhas Dragon Tree is often shown to be a Ginkgo, and continued to appear throughout Chinese culture, always associated with an optimistic view of the future. Chinese monks ultimately introduced the tree to Japan, where it remains very popular in temples and tea gardens. In later years, the Ginkgo has also become a symbol of strength and longevity, endurance and vitality, having survived the bombing of Hiroshima and continued to grow on land that scientists said would take 75 years to clear and rebirth new growth. Yin Yang, Light Dark, Good Bad... Eastern cultures have always embraced the concept of duality. Often expressed as yin and yang, duality recognizes the male and female aspects of all living creatures. Duality also teaches that both light and darkness are of equal import. Although ginkgo trees are dioecious, having either male or female reproductive organs, the leaves of the plant possess a two-lobed structure. The name biloba acknowledges this and the trees are often used to symbolize and celebrate the importance of both the yin and the yang. Just like all of us, we were strong, resilient and survived 2020... and are definitely looking towards a more enjoyable and prosperous 2021. Here is to your health, wealth and happiness as we move into a new year!
