Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for Sunday night into Monday for much of northern into central Iowa. A strong storm system will bring rain to the state ton...ight into Sunday, then transitioning over to snow as temperatures cool to near or below freezing late Sunday. The transition zone from rain to snow will be very sharp - in some cases a single county could see 3+ inches of snow on the north side and 1.5+ inches of rain on the south side. Where this zone will set up is not certain and any change in track could mean big changes in potential impacts. See more

Beware of high fire danger into the early evening! Gusty winds of 35 to 45 mph, dry fuels and a somewhat dry airmass will provide for an increased risk of wild...fires throughout the afternoon and early evening. Avoid any outdoor burning and report any uncontrolled fire to local authorities! See more

HOT Thursday as storm chances return. Thunderstorm chances return to the state beginning tonight and continuing through Thursday night. The most likely time ...window for thunderstorm activity will be mid-afternoon through the evening hours Thursday. Expect the highest thunderstorm chances to reside across north central into eastern Iowa with lower chances to the south and east. Some of the storms will have the potential to become severe and produce large hail and damaging wind gusts. Thursday may also be our hottest day so far this year as temperatures climb well into the 90s to around 100 degrees. A few new record highs are possible. Humidity levels should be too high, which will keep heat index values near actual air temperatures. There is one caveat to the forecast with the possibility of thunderstorms and cloud cover which would locally reduce temperatures.

The hot and humid conditions will continue again today. High temperatures will be in the 90s with heat index values in the 90s to around 100 degrees. A complex ...of storms over the High Plains this evening will turn southeast and may reach western Iowa late tonight. A few storms may reach central Iowa on Friday before diminishing. The threat for severe weather is low and the potential for beneficial rainfall does not look promising. Rain chances are slim beyond Friday with little to no rain forecast through much of next week.
