Thursday, August 22 at 6pm join me for another yoga class as we explore asana from an interoceptive mindset. I've been reading a lot on the historical meaning of Hatha in yoga. It's story is incredible and surprisingly complicated. Hatha means force. Ha and Tha mean the sun and the moon. Hatha yogis have spent more time looking to merge with Raja yoga than any other group that I have read so far. The reasons for that are complicated. Did you know the earliest mention o...f Hatha is actually not even in India? It was first sourced from Buddhist tantric texts. It is also thought that many of the austerities incorporated into some of the Hatha philosophy were born out of African shamanism. Hatha also spent time rubbing elbows with Indian tantra and thus emerged the notion of chakras and kundalini in the Indian texts of Hatha. It is from this evolution of the Indian Hatha that many scholars believe the word's definition, "force", is used to define the incorporation of asana, pranayama, bandhas, and mudras to enhance of force of prana rising through the sushumna nadi.
